What is SandArtRocks?

Behind SMArt

SandArtRocks is a Waratah-Wynyard group of local, caring, likeminded individuals interested in facilitating a yearly event for families, to draw attention to and celebrate the geology of the local area. The event will be designed for all community members to participate in a relaxed, collaborative environment.

The Event

SandArtRocks is planning on beginning small but SandArtRocks will endeavour to facilitate and promote the event to finally being a world-wide geological noted activity funded by sponsorship. 2025 is the first year of the event.

The Group

SandArtRocks is a not-for-profit group relying on grants funding in the first instance to run the event. Where possible all aspects of the event will be provided for the community at no cost.

Join us on March 1st from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Wynyard Beach Foreshore, a free family-friendly event celebrating our region’s geology with sand sculpting, hands-on exploration, and fun for all ages.

SandArtRocks is a community initiative by a group of caring and like-minded individuals from Waratah-Wynyard. This not-for-profit group aims to celebrate the geology of the local area with a yearly family-friendly event.

The first SMArt event will take place in 2025, and the group relies on grants to provide a free, inclusive experience for all.

The event is a combination of sand sculpting and geological exploration, held on the Wynyard Beach Foreshore.

  • Scheduled on the same day as the annual Gone Nuts event (in collaboration with Tasmanian Multi-Sport Adventures Pty Ltd).
  • Features activities for all age groups:
    • Educational sessions about local geological features.
  • Aims to support families attending the Gone Nuts race by offering a relaxing and interactive experience in the final weeks of summer.
  • Date: Annually, on the day of the Gone Nuts event. – 1st March 2025
  • Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM (aligned with tide schedules).
  • Location: Wynyard Beach Foreshore.
  • Cost: Free for all participants
  • Booking: Pre-booking is essential as numbers are limited. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available.
  • Bring Your Own Supplies: Participants should bring spades, buckets, moulding shapes, and other tools for sand sculpting.
  • What’s Provided:
    • Free sausage in bread.
    • Drinks.
    • Sunscreen.
    • Sun hats.
  • The event is designed to respect the traditional owners of the land and ensure environmental sustainability.

Sandbuilding/General Info

  • All young people must be accompanied by a parent, grand parent or carer.
  • The parent, grand parent or carer will be responsible for their own young people, including supervisory toilet visits, if needed.
  • The parent, grandparent or carer are required to be actively involved with the activities.
  • SMArt will provide the guidelines around the activities and will run the event.
  • All participants must wear a sun hat and sunscreen (provided on the day).
  • Please bring your buckets, spades & sand building things!
  • No swimming or water play will be allowed at the event.

Geological Excursion

  • Discover the inside story of the Table Cape volcano—we’ll observe Table Cape from the nearby rocky breakwater and talk about:
    • The Volcano—Where didit come from? What made it erupt? How does lava form? What does it look like?
    • What heppened after the volcano erupted? How did the rocks of the breakwater form?
  • Then, looking closely through magnifying glasses—can we find lava bubbles and crystals in the rock? How did they get there? Why is the Table CApe volcano important for Wynyard?

This activity is suitable for age 7 years and older.
